National Football League

Basically, the National Football League (NFL) is a professional American football league. The NFL is one of the major professional sports leagues in North America. Moreover, it is the highest professional level of American football in the whole world. Also, NFL is said to be the wealthiest professional sport league by revenue and with the most valuable teams too. There are 32 teams in the league, which are equally divided between the National Football Conference (NFC) and the American Football Conference (AFC) i.e. 16 teams per conference. Later in this article, the names of the 32 participating teams are also mentioned. Starting from early September, the NFL’s 17 – week regular season runs till late December. Each team gets to play a total of 16 matches in regular season with one bye week.


After the completion of regular season, seven teams from each conference compete in the playoffs. To specify, these seven teams consists of the four division winners and three wild card teams. Playoffs is a single – elimination tournament culminating in the Super Bowl. To elaborate, Super Bowl is played between the champions of NFC and AFC and is usually held on first Sunday of February.

History of NFL

Earlier in 1920, NFL was formed as the American Professional Football Association (APFA). Afterwards, in 1922 season the league got its name as the National Football League. Initially, the champions of the season were decided through end – of – season standings. But, in 1933 a playoff season was implemented that culminated with the NFL championship game until 1966. Finally, after an agreement of merger of NFL and AFL, the first Super Bowl was held in 1967. Specifically, Super Bowl was held to determine a champion between the best teams from both the leagues. Further, NFL possesses the highest average attendance of any professional sport in the whole world i.e. 67,591.
